Think Critically About Botox

Botox injections are very popular and there is a lot of information about them online in places like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube. It can seem great because these types of information channels can generate leads for businesses.

It’s important for you as the client to demand transparency when you’re educating yourself and you want to think critically when you are considering an injector.

A popular treatment with Botox is an injection around the lips to lessen a “gummy smile.” There are many injectors AND clients consuming social media content to educate themselves, but how accurate is this information…really?

A Study in 2021 looked at 200 YouTube videos about gummy smile/Botox. The study found that only 2.6% of these videos mentioned any contraindications to the procedure. This doesn’t mean there are no contraindications to gummy smile Botox treatment, it just means it wasn’t mentioned. BUT many viewers may draw the conclusion that because it was rarely mentioned, it must rarely happen.

Why is this important? Risks and benefits (including contraindications) should be easy to understand in the first meeting you have with your injector. You should not choose and injector because they are “cheap” or “affordable” and you should see red flags if your injector does not know risks and benefits to each separate procedure.

The study found all of these videos to generally be low in quality. You should always vet your information by asking an experienced injector, whether they’re giving you injections or teaching/mentoring you about injecting.

The internet is rife with good information, but it’s hard to weed out the bad or poor quality when clicks equal money and shock value and sex appeal result in the most views. Good information endures…..and it's exactly the transparency you should be requesting when you meet your injector for the first time.
